Concrete Slab Raising
Concrete slab raising is sometimes referred to as mudjacking or slabjacking, and is a great, economical solution for sunk and settled concrete.
What is Slab Raising with Polyurethane Foam Injection
It seems more and more common to see concrete slabs such as sidewalks, driveways, steps, patios, and pool decks to be sunk or uneven.
Concrete can sink or move for a variety of reasons, whether it is poor drainage, poor subsurface compaction, tree roots, or expansive soils. Either way, sunken or uneven concrete can pose a safety and liability issue. Luckily, many uneven concrete slabs can be repaired instead of replaced with a relatively noninvasive process known as slabjacking.
This involves injecting a high-density polyurethane foam under the slab. The foam expands almost immediately and lifts the slab back up.
Concrete lifting via polyurethane foam injection is less expensive than replacing sunken concrete, and you can walk on the slab as soon as the repair is done.
High Density Polyurethane Foam Injection process
- A series of 5/8” holes are drilled a few feet apart. This is typically 3-4’ spacing
- Specially designed removable injection ports are installed
- A series of High Density Polyurethane Foam is injected at different intervals below the concrete to fill voids, compact loose soil, and raise the concrete slab.
- Once the slab is lifted, the injection ports are removed and the holes are patched.
- There is about a 15-minute waiting period for the foam to cure to be ready for vehicle traffic.
- The slab is now repaired and ready for regular use
Why Slabjacking or Foamjacking is better than Mudjacking
Mudjacking uses a mixture of Portland cement and sand or dirt to lift the concrete. This product weighs around 150 pounds per cubic foot where High Density Polyurethan Foam weighs about 2.5 pounds per cubic foot. The benefit of the lighter weight is that we are not adding more weight to already compromised soils. Another benefit of High Density Polyurethane Foam Injection is the foam is not subject to erosion or deterioration. Another benefit of Slabjacking with High Density Polyurethane Foam is that it is a fast repair. Cure times for Mudjacking will exceed 4 hours, and Foamjacking has a cure time of just 15 minutes before being traffic ready.
How much does it cost to raise my concrete with High Density Polyurethane Foam Injection?
The cost of Slabjacking varies greatly depending on size of the concrete slab, how much it has sunk, the hazards it presents, and jobsite access.
Usually our residential Concrete Raising with High Density Polyurethane Foam Injection will range from $600 to $2200. Another good way to look at it is, Slabjacking will usually be about 1/3 to ½ as much as concrete replacement.
